I’ve always said, that I’d love to go and see the Olympics one year. Just to be around all the excitement, and ceremony would be a terrific experience. While, I haven’t totally changed my mind on that thought, I’ve also thought of late, that it would be kind of cool to go see the World Cup some year as well. I like, that even though it’s an international event, it’s not entirely dominated by the western world. So much of popular sports is dominated by the US, it’s nice to see a sporting even, that is more evenly distributed when it comes to talent. Not everything can be bought by money.
There something to be said for the sheer number of kids that can pick up a ball of whatever shape and size, start kicking it around, and have the game of their lives. And who knows where it will lead them. A little bit of talent, some determination, a dash of luck, and some good coaching may just land them at a World Cup event some day. For someone like me, the only way I’ll get into a World Cup game, is if I get my hands on some World Cup tickets. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Considering that every ticket bought supports that game that much more, and increases the likelihood that more kids and grown up big-kids get a chance to play.
My kids have all had the soccer bug at one point in their lives, but only one of them continues to play to this day. It’s one of here favorite activities, and the friends she has through that soccer league, are ones that could follow her for many years. Competing in a physical sport, is one of the best things that kids of any age can participate in. I do, still to this day enjoy competing in a number of different sports. It doesn’t matter what your game is (Squash is mine), the point is that you get out and participate.
Even if you don’t make it to South Africa to see any of the games, you can bet that television coverage will be second to none. I plan to watch as many games as I can, and I hope you do to. Live or televised, I’m sure it will be a great tournament. If your looking to keep up to date on the latest action then check out football results or World Cup 2010 for all the news.
