Should Basketplayers Wear Glasses?

I still surprises me, that to this day professional sporting leagues are hesitant to force their players to wear protective glasses in their sport of choice.  Considering that the biggest asset of any sports league, is the players that participate, you would think the owners would be more proactive in protecting their most valuable capital.  But, as history has shown, getting professional athletes to change their ways is never an easy thing.  It’s almost a superstitious thing with them.  Not hockey player at any level these days would dream of stepping on the ice without a helmet on, but for years that was the practice.  Even when the NHL brought the mandatory helmet rule in, they only applied it to new players entering the league.  It took a while before the older insistent players finally retired, and everyone wears one now.

Personally, I think even basketball owners should have their eyeglasses checked, if they think it’s not necessary in their league.  Sure, I know it’s not likely that your going to get your eye put out by a basketball, but there are all those other moving objects on the court to consider.  Thinks like elbows, hands, fingers, fists, and knees all flying around them.  I remember Bill Laimbeer getting whacked in the eye during the Piston heydays.  He came to his senses, and ended up wearing a full face shield, before he got back on the court.  Better than getting stuck with prescription glasses to correct a permanently damaged eye.
